Which Was Which

In the afternoon she saw the lake
red and orange with the reflection of trees.
The next morning she walked around the lake,
and there was nothing but sparkling blue from shore to shore.
But along the very edge of water, under the overhanging trees,
there was a mat of dead, decaying leaves.

Oh, she thought, then, that she was the lake
and you were the trees,
but later she decided that surely you were the lake
and she the trees.
As she cried herself to sleep that night
she had to admit to herself that she was not sure which was which.
